Plasma and Stripe Are Developing Multi-Currency Cards

Plasma and Stripe are jointly developing multi-currency cards, with Plasma acting as a design partner. The planned card currencies are USD, BRL, EUR, MXN and COP. For Plasma One users, the potential benefit is spending a matching currency balance without routing the payment through USD. Plasma has not provided a specific launch date. Plasma is also moving to Stripe's stablecoin card infrastructure and has not said whether existing Plasma One cards will need to be replaced.

A EUR balance paying a merchant in EUR illustrates the mechanism. If the payment otherwise follows EUR → USD → EUR, direct EUR → EUR spending would remove the intermediate conversion. That could avoid the cost of that conversion, provided the card actually supports charging the EUR balance for that purchase.

Automatically choosing among multiple balances according to the merchant's currency is a further, longer-term goal. That selection is not live. Holding several currencies and having a card automatically pick the matching balance are separate capabilities.

Before spending, current cardholders should check their card's denomination and billing currency, then confirm which balance will actually be charged. A EUR balance only avoids the USD detour if the payment can use it directly.
