Krak Parent Payward Agrees to Buy Saldo Bank
Payward has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Saldo Finance Oy, the Finnish parent of Saldo Bank UAB, a licensed specialised bank in Lithuania. Closing is expected in 2027, subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions. The agreement opens a route towards European banking infrastructure for the group behind Krak.
Saldo operates in 4 markets and has passporting rights in the Netherlands, bringing that footprint to 5 markets. Those banking permissions do not amount to a new Krak card launch in 5 countries. Saldo also already has a Finnish credit card; that existing product is separate from any future Krak card offering.
Payward Banking could use the acquisition to support deposit products, lending, credit cards, SEPA payments and card issuance through banking as a service. These are infrastructure plans. Signing the deal does not turn an existing Krak account into a bank deposit or automatically add deposit insurance to its balance.
For a Krak Card holder, a service or protection change would need to be assessed against the actual account contract and any change in the issuer or entity holding the money. Even after an acquisition closes, a balance remaining with the same entity under the same contract cannot be treated as a newly insured bank deposit solely because the corporate owner acquired a bank.
