Paying From Several Assets at Once With Krak

Krak can spend from a very wide range of assets and can split a single payment across several of them. That is unusual, and it is more useful for housekeeping than for saving money.

Splitting is good for clearing dust, not for saving money

It clears dust. Small leftover balances that are annoying to swap individually get consumed by ordinary purchases instead of sitting there. It also lets a purchase complete when no single balance covers it, without you manually converting first.

Splitting does not avoid conversion; it pays the spread more than once

Splitting does not avoid conversion. Each portion drawn from a crypto balance is converted at the point of sale, so a payment split across three assets carries the spread three times rather than once. If one fiat balance would have covered the purchase, using it is cheaper than spreading the same amount across several tokens.

Setting an order you actually want

The sensible default is to put fiat first, then the asset you are least attached to, and leave long-term holdings at the bottom. That way routine spending drains the balances you intended to spend and leaves the rest alone.

Check the order occasionally: a priority list set once and forgotten will eventually be spending something you did not mean to sell.
