Ether.fi Cash Card liquidation risk needs attention
The most expensive mistake with a crypto-backed card is thinking the spending limit is the real limit. It is not. The real limit is the point where collateral risk becomes uncomfortable.
Ether.fi Cash Card can be powerful because it lets users spend without immediately selling supported crypto assets. But if the borrowing side is backed by assets that move, the account needs room for ugly days.
A normal purchase can become a market position
With a debit card, a purchase reduces cash. With a collateral-backed card, a purchase can increase debt against assets that may fall in price. The purchase itself might be ordinary: groceries, a hotel, a laptop. The balance sheet around it is not ordinary.
This is why liquidation risk deserves plain language. If collateral value drops enough, the account may need more collateral, repayment, or another action to stay healthy. Waiting until the app is shouting is a bad plan.
Leave more room than feels efficient
Crypto users often dislike idle buffers. They look inefficient. But a buffer is not idle if it prevents forced decisions during a market drop.
Do not borrow up to the edge just because the interface allows it. Keep a cushion that survives a bad weekend, not only a quiet afternoon. If that makes the card less exciting, good. Exciting is usually the wrong mood for credit.
Match spending to monitoring
If you are not willing to check the position regularly, use the card lightly. If you want to route larger purchases through it, treat collateral health like part of the purchase process.
The card can make crypto spending smoother. It cannot make volatility disappear. That sentence is not dramatic, but it is the one worth remembering.
